When I was new to desktops and computers, local technicians and computer (shops) parts sellers always recommend having anti-virus software to prevent my computers from viruses and malware. As a kid, I don't have any luxury of purchasing premium anti-virus software such as AVG, Kaspersky, or Avira anti-virus software. Computer software such as AVG or Avira cost like 2500-4000 pesos. And as an average class B student like me who had an average of 1000 pesos allowance per week cannot afford software like that. The only choice I can make before is to get free version of Anti-virus software like AVG or Avira free version.
It is Useless
I don't believe that Anti-Virus software helps in protecting
my PC. Why? I've used anti-virus once in my 11 years using the
desktop, and never in my life I've encountered a specific virus, malware
or adware that infected my PC. I often use the web, go through different
websites and download massive of unknown files,
Google and other search engines are smarter and they
filter results from those who intend to spread computer viruses. In early
2006, users got infected with viruses because some internet users tend to
be "experimental" with matured website which turns out to be a
bogus sites containing viruses. Admit it or not, you'll get infected with
computer viruses because you've clicked a link that enables you to
download something for free. Limewire is a P2P (peer to peer) torrent application
that enables a user to download MP3, movies and viruses for free. 78%
of Limewire users have downloaded a fake mp3 file containing viruses.
Since I was not a fan of P2P downloading during those times, I was never
infected by viruses. Also, the weak security of Windows XP operating
system is the most vulnerable prey of viruses, since XP is phased out
after windows 7 roll into the market, then fewer individuals like me got
infected by virus.
Freeware Anti-Virus is DOUBLE Useless
The only thing that annoys me is to install useless
software in my pc. Freeware anti-virus like Kaspersky, Avira, and
AVG doesn't do anything but to scan your PC all day. However, they can
prevent worms from USB flash disk but not viruses that has been plaguing
PC for months, probably for years. Freeware anti-virus allows you to see
viruses yes, but they won't delete the virus unless you purchase the
premium version. And that's plainly bulls*** what's the purpose of the
anti-virus if they won't do their job, it's like hiring an engineer that
will look through your property for possible damages, but they won't
do something about it unless you give them money.
It makes your Process slower
Anti-Virus doesn't make your PC faster, rather it makes everything
slower. These software eats a lot of process. It also acts as the baby brother
of windows vista's UAC "user account control" which do nothing but to
ask you snappy questions. As for my experience, these anti-virus doesn't really
do anything to fasten up the PC's process.
If there's another thing I hate about it is the fact that it
conduct a random scan of the whole process even without your permission. It
sucks, especially when you're playing online games or doing some heavy gaming
online.
Remembering 2006
I remember the year 2006, when I finally purchased our
first "decent" desktop at home. We barely had knowledge on
PC specifications, or any programs, all we wanted to do on our computer
is to browse websites and play games. In those days, installing software
will require technicians to do the dirty work for you. and then one day,
my computer got infected with a virus. I called up the technician which is
also a family friend."You need an Anti-Virus software" the computer
technician tech who reformatted my computer. He charge 50 pesos per
software, As a computer illiterate, Since I was not that over-techie
as before, so I agreed to pay 50 pesos for a "freeware."
That's pretty stupid of mine to pay for something that's free, but
who could blame me, internet connection at that time download for like
25-40kbps at the most basic Smart Bro plan. The most popular
Anti-virus software at that generation is AVG anti-virus.
