Is 2Mbps Internet Plan Fast Enough for you?

Google's New Logo

In this generation, Internet is one part of our basic need. It gives us ease on our traditional way of doing things. Internet is almost the closest thing everybody has to everything.  Making it a drug to all kinds of people. Some people like me would like to stay at home and watch YouTube videos because everything I need to entertain myself can be found on the internet.  The information it feeds us made us psychologically dependent since it contains everything we wanted, from entertainment, news, educational information, and social channel. It also allow us to read all kinds of books cheaply compared to bookstores, also it allows us to purchase and read reviews about a certain item before we can even purchase a certain item we desire.  It also provides us efficient ways to communicate to different kinds of people in long distances without the extra pay for  International Direct Dialing (IDD) rates.

The right people to help us connect to the network are data provided by the Internet Service Providers (ISP). Sadly, the internet experience of all users rely on ISPs. The faster connection ISP provide, the better. It's a basic fact that consumers are responsible in choosing better internet plan for their home but consumers choose to pick the lowest internet plan because we lack knowledge on the coverage of the internet plan. It is rarely to see Internet Service Provider in the Philippines educate customers on the coverage of  their internet plan they are vending. For example, in my experience with my past internet connection a 2 Mbps (megabits per second) is equivalent to download speed of max 210-220 kbps. (kilobytes per second) frequent internet users (those who are not so tech savy)

But the question is, is it really enough for your usage?

2 Mbps is Fast and Slow at the Same Time

The most cheapest yet decent DSL internet connection in the Philippines is at least 2 Megabits per second. (Mbps)  but most Filipinos often complain on the speed it provides. Based on my own opinion, for a non-gamer and frequent user of internet, this speed is fair for casual browsing (reading news, browsing youtube, posting selfie on instagram).

Your 2 Mbps can be considered fast for one (1) user doing the following:

New Youtube Logo
  • YouTube - Endless YouTube video all day at 360-480p without experiencing any buffer, while browsing and uploading to Facebook, while having a video-call in Skype. - user won't experience much of a difference in browsing speed. Streaming a 1 hour High-Definition YouTube video clip usually eat up estimated at 1.2 Gig. it will be impossible for an ordinary user to stream 1080p video without any lag.

  • Downloading Large Movie Files - Downloading a 1 Gb movie will take closely to 2 hours. You can download additional 11 additional movie if you are planning to go AFK (away from keyboard) the whole day. While downloading movies, you should expect your browsing experience to be poor, at this rate, Facebook homepage will take forever to load, and more likely all the site wish to visit will load forever.

from their desktop or mobile phones
  • Streaming Audio through Spotify - You can stream unlimited audio through Spotify without any problems or speed delays on your browsing. At this speed you can even download movies at this rate with the remaining 80% of remaining internet speed. Browsing experience through different social media will be somehow fair, but not as fast as you can imagine.

social networking site
  • Social Network - 2 Mbps internet connection can cater all social media at the same time. You can send and receive tweets without any speed delays, spend time chatting and stalking in Facebook, like pictures on Instagram, and repinning pins at Pinterest. No speed delays will be experienced with this type of browsing on this connection. Facebook's home page is usually filled with pictures and videos. These high-resolution pictures requires at least 200-400kb to load. You can also stream music, read news or watch YouTube video while you are browsing social networks.

  • News and Reading Manga- You can read your daily news website with no speed lags, or read chapters from your favorite manga without experiencing speed problems. Images will load at about 0.5 second (Other browsing lags may be caused by the the images resolution or website's bandwidth capacity)

  • Games - This internet plan would allow you to play flash games on social networks, and play "Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game" (MMORPG) fairly.
  • Downloading patch for online games will take 2 hours to 4 hours to finish. (ave. of 3 Gig) This internet connection will be able to meet most of gaming requirements, letting you play the game decently if not best. While gaming, the user will be able to streaming videos but the connection latency would fall during the process which would make the gaming experience poor and laggy.

skype
Chatting and Video Call - 2Mbps is enough to have a good video call quality. It might be not as good as higher bandwidth connection, but the connection will be able to be consistent all through out.  On Skype platform, video calls between a mobile device and a computer is at around 600kbps
2 Mbps connection should be fast enough for a single user. The bandwidth speed will be sufficient and relatively cheaper internet plan for users. However, daily bandwidth allowance may change  browsing experience.

Thanks for sharing this! I love how you provided complete details for each application. I honestly think that a 2Mbps speed is not enough, especially if you work from home and like to play online games. It's better to look for ISPs like Rango that offer internet plans with 200 Mbps download speed and 20 Mbps upload speed which is ideal for gaming and for students and professionals.

Channels that your Cable TV should have!

Online streaming such as HooQ, Netflix, and other  online streaming sites made us take control on movies to watch, or what content should you watch. It certainly is the future of television, but it still can't replace the old fashioned cable TV for home because of some technicalities that are so hard to understand. Cable TV is a good thing to have at home. Cable TV provides us entertainment packages for us to see at our own Television Set. The only difference between Cable TV and Online streaming is the content shown at the same moment. HooQ and other online sites offers you to watch what your heart desired at any moment of the day... as long as you have internet connection.  Unlike in Cable TV, if you are tuning in a series, you have to wait for a specific time to follow the story of the series that are you following. It's a mere fact that Cable TV providers are providing pre-set channel combination for your cable TV package these package are the basic ones. Even tho

Do you know what CIR (Committed Information Rate) is?

In the Converge ICT's FTTX plan, the Committed Information Rate (CIR) is displayed as "Minimum Speed" There are many things our Internet Service Providers won't just tell us. Some of it are just "little jargons" in which we cannot totally understand, though some are very crucial when it comes to the impact to "us", subscribers. In a good way, it'll save us the trouble understanding the technicalities of network and communication. But in a bad way, not knowing these "technicalities" limits our capability to maximize our usage. One of the hidden terms that our ISP failed to disclose in their ads is the CIR "Committed Information Rate."   It is important to know what CIR is especially when it acts as a "guarantee" that the internet connection will be having it's minimum bandwidth that the users can utilize in the plan.  Why is it important to know what is CIR? It's plainly simple, it gives the user ass
